About me

Unemployed, former local journalist. Nerd, living in the North West of England. I like tech I can't afford, things I don't need, TV, movies, firmware updates, The Tick, Warcraft, and music. This is the sort of stuff I'll probably write about here. In short this blog is a distraction from pondering if I will ever get a new job and to stop me obsessively rep farming all of my toons. You have been warned. If you want to advertise or give me free stuff to write about, get in touch!Read more about me »

About the Default Nerd

Good day to you.

Chances are you’re only here because we’ve met, probably virtually somewhere on the internet. The chances of us having encountered each other in the outside world are minimal, so we don’t need to pretend to know each other. You haven’t forgotten my name, I haven’t forgotten yours.

I am Lou, I am in my late 20s. I live in the North West of England and have done since late 2008.  I left my job as a journalist in Wiltshire, thinking it would be a jolly romp, moving up North to live with my partner.  I also thought it would be fairly easy to get a new job doing some basic admin.  I was wrong.

So as I sit trying to put off looking through the job sites or restraining my hands from turning World of Warcraft on again, I thought it would be interesting to try and write again.  After more than a year of not really writing anything, I thought it might be interesting to see if I could.  I never wanted to be a journalist, I just became obliged.  What I’m doing here, however, is not journalism, it’s rambling thoughts about things I like, and rants about things I do not.  I don’t expect a great deal of it to make any sense.  If of course you like it then, well, I like you.

If you happen to be a potential employer, I have the following skills, I know how to use computers, I know how to use the internet, I know how to use email and fax, telephone and anything I don’t know I pick up pretty quickly. I’m good with people so long as they’re not idiots, I’m fairly amusing, I work hard so long as there’s work to do.  Boredom is not my friend and I’ve had a great deal of that in the last year or so.

For those of you who can’t employ me, that’s okay, you’re important too.

My background is nerdism. I grew up in Essex, liking synths and Star Trek, and latterly the X-Files.  At one point during secondary school I went to a Star Trek club, we wore uniforms and everything.  I was bullied a lot.  After scoring the best grades of my year in school (not that big a boast, it was a comp), I went on to spend five years wasting my life doing a GNVQ then a BSc in Media. I liked the idea of working in television, right up until I found out how competitive that was.  Now I no longer know what I want to be when I grow up.  I’m waiting for someone to invent a role which requires me to play Warcraft, read Terry Pratchett and make music in order to save the planet.

I am in a band, you may listen to us here.

More to come.
